Model of the Day: Hot Wheels Racing Ford GT-40...

Well folks, in case you didn't know, I actually have a real job.  That job keeps me quite busy, and occasionally takes over my life entirely.  My normal 6 hours of sleep turns into 4 or 5, and I end up exhausted.

I am at that point now, and thankfully I have this set of photos I have been meaning to show.  It is the fifth model we have showcased from last year's Road Racing batch of Hot Wheels Racing.  Most of the attention has gone to the E30 BMW, Greenwood and COPO Vettes, and the Porsche 935.  This GT40 might be an old casting, but it has never looked better.

Enjoy, and off to work I go...

Model of the Day: Hot Wheels Racing James Garner COPO Corvette...

I have been waiting to show this one for awhile.

It might be a little obvious that I am quite enamored with the final batch of Hot Wheels 2012 Racing.  The BMW E30 M3, Porsche 935, and Greenwood Corvette were easily three of my favorites of the entire year.  But we can't overlook this one.

I have had one carded for awhile, but have been trying to get a second to set free.  A VERY generous collector in Canada (Thanks Joed!) came to the rescue, and now I am able to show it here.  I am glad I opened it.  The COPO Corvette looked nice in its debut, but this version is...um...well, just have a look.

And thanks to Mattel I now know that Jim Rockford liked a few Corvettes to go with his '74 Firebird.  Doing some reading on the real thing shows A) someone at Mattel knows their stuff, and B) this is one freaky cool car.  These photos of James Garner with his Vettes are fantastic.

Flying Customs is replacing Hot Ones, Boulevard continues, but will we see models like these again?  I really hope so.  But if they have to go out, they went out on the right batch.  They may cost a bit for US collectors to get them, but to me it is completely worth it...

A little fantasy race:

First Look: Hot Wheels Racing '78 Porsche 935/78...

I have been waiting to put together a post on the HW Racing Porsche.  The other two New Models in this batch, the Greenwood Corvette and '92 M3 were featured a few weeks, but I was waiting for an example of the Porsche to open.

Well it arrived today so it is time to have a look.

First, thank goodness for our Canadian and Brazilian friends, who have been able to find these models for many of us.  Whether by ebay or other means, these models can be acquired by those who want them (although you might have to pay a little).

As much as I like the other three models in this batch (and we will be featuring James Garner's COPO Corvette a little later), the gems are the three new models:

(Click on the model name to purchase these models.  The prices have died down a little since they first appeared, so this may be the time to get them before they go scarce again...)

'78 Porsche 935/78

You can see the shape of the 911 hidden in the 935/78, nicknamed "Moby Dick" for its whale-like tail.  Like the Greenwood Vette, it happily sits on the extreme side of things, and I love what Hot Wheels has done with the casting.  Even the generic livery looks great.

And one of the unexpected highlights?  Check out those wheels!  The star design of the rims is black, and the rest red, deep dish and all, making them the best looking redline wheels I have ever seen.  I would imagine that if these wheels show up on a more common model, these wheels will be hoarded for customs.  I hope it happens...

It happens all the time:

A batch of cars is announced.  You look at the list and determine what models you will be most interested in.  Some words stand out.  For me, "Aston Martin", "Porsche", "Ferrari", and anything JDM-related instantly grab my attention.  For others, it might be "Mustang" or "Camaro".

Then the batch arrives, or you find it in the store.  You grab what you know you are going to grab, and then there is that one model that all of a sudden demands your attention.  You normally don't collect models like that one, but you know you have to have it.

This apparently happened with a lot of collectors last year when the two vintage Skylines arrived.  I have had folks tell me that the photos here at Lamley will peak their interest in a model they had previously ignored.  (That is by far my favorite compliment, by the way.)  One way or the other, it happens a lot.  A model we gave little thought to all of a sudden has our undivided attention.

Enter the Hot Wheels Racing '76 Greenwood Corvette.

As I mentioned in the BMW post, all 6 models (plus a few extras) of this rare Racing batch arrived at my house, essentially as a stop-off before they head to their final destination.  After seeing pics of this batch, I had made a deal that one BMW would stay with me, and the rest would be shipped off.  Then I saw the Greenwood Vette in person.

I knew nothing of the Greenwood wide-body Vettes until I saw this model.  The car is completely over-the-top, and there is absolutely nothing subtle about its appearance (and from what I understand, nothing subtle about how it sounds).  It is definitely a historic model, and the 1:1 even spent some time in the hands of Paul Newman.  The Vette was not going to go anywhere.  I called my friend, worked out a deal, and the Vette stayed.

I was able to keep it carded just long enough to get a photo, and then out it came.  What a great model.  The design, the wheels, and black metal base.  I don't know where we will see this model again, so I am just glad to have this one.  (And as I have said, it was not easy to get.)

RIP Hot Wheels Racing.  Between the Vintage Racing series last year, and the segmented series this year, we all have been beneficiaries of some wonderful models.  There are several out there I regret not buying, but I am happy to have those I am most fond of, including the BMW and Greenwood Vette.  I will probably put a post together tomorrow on the Racing Models I was able to find.

And yes, let me reiterate.  These will not be easy to find.  If you don't have a friend in Canada, go find one.  Or Brazil.  Or empty your your piggy bank and go to ebay.

Yes, we are a little bummed that Mattel chose to scratch the series right as they were about to do the best batch of the whole year, but at least some leaked out.  Good luck...
