First Look: Hot Wheels Fiat 500 in white...

Recolors are cool.  We are always happy to see second versions of the castings we like, no matter what the color.  But there are times when a recolor is so good, and upstages the first color so badly, that it is almost like a do-over of the model's debut.

And that is exactly the case with the Fiat 500.  Designer Ryu Asada's little happy creation looked nice in red, but it ravishes in white.  Accent it with a burgundy interior, and you have one of the great debut models of 2014.

You get a better idea of how nice this casting is.  Hot Wheels collectors are getting more and more familiar with Ryu's work, after coming over from Matchbox last year.  There have been many Hot Wheels models that have that "Matchbox realism" feeling to them, with realistic ratios, intricate details, and side mirrors.  That was one of Ryu's strengths at Matchbox, and he has clearly brought it over to blue.  The Civic EF showcases it best, but so does the Fiat.  And we know there are many more to come.

But let's ogle over the Fiat for awhile.  You customizers are probably thinking turning this version into an Abarth should be easy, and we agree.  The pearl white is very sharp, and showcases how sporty the little Fiat really is.  It even makes the dreaded Y5 wheels look nice.

We imagine this model won't be as hard to find as the red version ended up being, as it will probably carry through at least a second batch, as recolors usually do.  Good thing, because the white will end up being the model to have...

Hot Wheels Fiat 500 (2014 New Model):

First Look: Hot Wheels Fiat 500...

A tiny little surprise, this one is.

Well, in some ways it is a surprise, in others it is not.

Why is it a surprise?  It is a Hot Wheels, it is not the Abarth (although converting it into one would only require a few deco changes on a 1:64 Hot Wheels car), no racing deco, and front and rear tampos.  This seems like something Matchbox would have done 3 years ago.

Why is it not a surprise?  Because it was designed by Ryu Asada, who recently crossed the hall from Matchbox to Hot Wheels.  Ryu created all those realistic models that Matchbox was churning out a few years ago, and the Fiat seems to fit right in.  Tight dimensions, stock lines and height, side mirrors, lots of detail.  Just like one of Ryu's other recent creations, the Honda Civic EF.  If you didn't know already, Ryu is one of Mattel's most talented designers, and realism is his forte.

As far as the Fiat itself, I have always liked the new 500.  But I also really like small cars.  Fiat's ad campaign here fancies the 500 as a sexy little Italian car, and I can't say I don't disagree.  That is why I am a little bummed out by its debut color.  This maroon red looks perfect on the Alfa 8C, but a little drab on the Fiat.  A bright red, or maybe yellow, or even bright blue would have been better choices.

Nonetheless, a great little addition to the line...

Hot Wheels Fiat 500 (2014 New Models):

Surprise! Hot Wheels 2014 Batch G is now out at Wheel Collectors...

We figured this was the week, and it was.  Hot Wheels 2014 Batch G has arrived.  The truck unloaded the cases today at Wheel Collectors, and there are some models to surely get excited about.

As far as the new models go, the Fiat 500 grabs most of our attention, followed by an interesting generic, the Ryura LX.  Both were designed by Ryu Asada (in case one model wasn't too obvious), and we will dive into both once they arrive here.  And they are on their way.

Outside of those, it seems super cars is the theme for this batch, with two Lamborghinis, and Alfa, a Porsche (one of our faves), a Lotus, and a Pagani.   A nice batch indeed.

You can see all the models by following the link below:

Which models will you pick up?

(And this may not be all.  The word is new batches of Retro Entertainment, Pop Culture, and Cool Classics are on their way...)
