First Look: Hot Wheels Acura NSX Concept...

The 25-year threshold for a Japanese car to achieve classic status is an appropriate cut-off.  If anything, it creates a certain anticipation for a old favorite to to finally be able to pass through the gates at the Japanese Classic Car Show and finally get its due.  And as you get older, more and more cars that you grew up with start becoming classics.

So, like many JDM enthusiasts, there are a few cars that I am excited to see pass through the gate.  Some have a year or two to wait (Nissan 300ZX Z32), others quite awhile (Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R).

But above those two is one car I cannot wait to see make classic status - the Acura/Honda NSX.  While I spent the 90's like every other kid my age ogling over the Porsche 959, Lamborghini Countach, and Ferrari Testarossa (Decisions, Decisions, Decisions).  Then 1990 arrived, as did the Acura NSX.  I remember for the first time noticing that while car screamed supercar, and lines seemed a little more simple than those over-the-top 80's monsters.  The "less-is-more" design aesthetic started making sense to me, and the Acura seemed to hit all the marks with me.

I still have a soft spot for that car, and would love to see one of the two Mattel brands take it on.  Of course Hot Wheels has done the Super GT version, but that model essentially eliminated all that I loved about the design of the NSX.  One day it is bound to happen, maybe in 2015 when the NSX finally achieves its classic status.

So the name NSX carries quite the Legacy (get it?) with many folks.  The body style as we know it was discontinued in 2005, and some thought the HSC Concept would be its replacement.  Thankfully it wasn't, and now we have the new NSX Concept that will go into production in 2015.  While lacking the charm of the original, the new NSX is a very nice-looking car, and utilizes the current Acura design queues nicely.  I like it, although there is a side of me that thinks the NSX name should stay with the original.  But count me a fan.

Which takes us to the Hot Wheels version.  A+.  The right color, the right wheels, front and rear tampos.  It may not be a candidate for collector's favorite model this year, but it surely should get votes for best executed model.  A true winner, and if future versions look like this one, they will easily go into the collection.  Ah, who am I kidding.  A good-looking Japanese car...it's in...
